Real Pains of Fibromyalgia

The diagnosis of fibromylagia, a debilitating pain syndrome that affects 2 to 4 percent of the population, has been controversial. The syndrome has been classified by some as a form of arthritis and by others a psychosomatic issue.

The scientific knowledge about fibromyalgia is growing and this condition is real, is characterized by a lower pain threshold and is associated with genetic factors. Those make some people to develop fibromyalgia. Pain, genetics, brain activity and more findings will lead to a better understanding and acceptance of fibromyalgia and related conditions.

Fibromyalgia is real and it must be learned more about the causes and most effective treatments for these disorders. The pain of fibromyalgia is real because many researches have been done and the neurobiology of this condition supports the notion. The difference between patients with and without fibromyalgia was shown by U-M using two neuroimaging techniques – functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).

These structures encode pain sensations normally to the people without pain, but in the case of those with fibromyalgia, the neural activity increased. Abnormalities within the central brain structures are present to patients with fibromyalgia.

A significant difference in the pain tolerance, and pain-related emotions and feelings, of healthy volunteers has been made to a small variation in the gene that encodes the enzyme called catechol-O-methyl transferase, or COMT. The future development of temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMD or TMJ, a condition related to fibromyalgia appear due the individual mutations in the COMT gene. Pain sensitivity is determined at least in part by a person’s genetic makeup.

Nowadays there are many debates about fibromyalgia which include also disagreements about how precisely it should be defined and whether people with the condition deserve compensation. The acceptance of it as a condition causing real pain should not be frustrated by those disagreements.

Is there any real help for those that suffer from fibromyalgia?
I have tried everything the doctor had given me. The only thing that really seemed to help was steroids, but of course I can't stay on those. The Lyrica I was given caused me to gain 40 pounds in 3 months. I need real help. Pain killers do nothing except make me feel weird, the pain is still there.

You need to see a shrink to sort this out. Many are medicated into more pain.

I have read some research about eliminating processed foods and gluten from the diet may help. There are some natural supplements out there supposed to help fibromyalgia. Visit http://www.needs.com for some info on helping fibromyalgia naturally.

I had a coworker that had it and the only relief she could get was from laying in a tanning bed but then that opens a whole new can of worms from the hazards of tanning. She tried to cover herself up as much as she could to avoid the rays … the heat she said really helped her aches a lot.

Best wishes for some well being !

Hello,
I feel this is such a "new" condition that it will be some time before anything else comes out.
Diet, environment including stress is all a apart of pain management. I too have pain most days, not most days every day!
Just change the way you do things to try and control the pain the best you can. It get real OLD hurting all the time, and like you I hate the pain meds out there.
I too gained weight a while back on one med. and weight is so hard to loose once you gained it :0(
There are herbs out there that help, and like I said keep the stress levels down, try and sleep which is hard to do at times!
Good luck and try and take care of your mental health as well. People do not understand that being in pain makes one act different at times.
Good luck

ADD
Food does have a big thing to do with my inflammation/pain etc. I cook everything, rarely do we go out to eat. I cut salt out of the diet, not all the way but try and not eat stuff presalted.
My big vise which is not good is coffee….
I wrap my arms and knees, hands so they keep warm.

I am curently taking Lyrica, Tramadol, Zanaflez and Ambien (for sleep) for Fibromyalgia. I am taking a total of 100mg of Lyrica daily. I was taking 75mg three times a day and when I was taking that much I gained weight. Since getting my dose lowered I have lost 17 of the 30 pounds that I gained.
You should talk to your doctor about the side effects of the medication. Sometimes it takes adjusting the dosages to come up with the right one for you.
Good luck and I wish you many pain free days.:)

fibromyalgia is made worse by having too much yeast in our bodies. so the first thing you need to do is tackle the yeast by omitting some foods from your diet that make yeast over grow. i recently bought these 3 books that really help if you want to reduce the yeast present in your body:

My sister has it too….she says the steroids make her gain weight..the pain pills don't work after a while. But what she has found that really helps is to keep calm.
Stress can kill you so being quiet and mild may add years to your life.
The bible tells us that a calm heart is the life of the fleshly oraganism.
